At the Myhre Syndrome Foundation, we work with doctors around the world who dedicate their professional lives to researching and finding answers for people with rare diseases. Recently, two were independently recognized for their contributions to medical science.
Bert Callewaert, MD, PhD.
Last winter, Bert Callewaert, MD, PhD was a recipient of the 2024 AstraZeneca Scientific Prize, which recognizes innovation in scientific research. Bert Callewaert was selected because of his pioneering work on congenital rare diseases of the elastic fiber, including work related to Myhre syndrome. You can learn more about his award here. Be sure to check out the video featuring Bert Callewaert and see how his research helps the Myhre syndrome community.
With a grant from the Myhre Syndrome Foundation in 2022, Bert Callewaert has been conducting research on zebrafish to learn more about Myhre syndrome and test potential novel therapies to increase the quality of life for people with Myhre.
In January, Pr. Valerie Cormier-Daire was awarded the 2024 Pasteur-Weizmann/Servier Prize, which recognizes an individual for their significant contribution to a biomedical discovery leading to a major therapeutic application. Pr. Valerie Cormier-Daire’s research on skeletal structures “has opened up new and promising perspectives for improving the care of young patients,” according to the Pasteur-Weizmann Council, which awarded the prize.
Pr. Valerie Cormier-Daire
Pr. Valerie Cormier-Daire’s research on the microfibrillar network (SMAD4 in Myhre syndrome) helps patients with Myhre Syndrome. She recently received a grant from the Myhre Syndrome Foundation to focus on immunotherapy designed to target and reduce fibrosis (scarring) that contributes to stenosis in Myhre syndrome.
We are fortunate to partner with doctors and scientists who demonstrate remarkable success in their fields and for their professional commitment to advancing the cause of people living with Myhre syndrome. Congratulations to Dr. Callewaert and Pr. Cormier-Daire, thank you for your continued dedication.
